Juliet DaetMy MSSS journey started as a Grade 4 student when I posed a simple question and used a humble experiment to discover the answer. Nevertheless, it was the beginning of my science fair days, and reflecting back, the MSSS definitely marks the highlight of my scholastic career. I chose to participate in the MSSS because of my love of science, and the symposium provides a learning opportunity like none other. Here, I was free to be a scientist and let my innovative juices flow. I was able to discover the answers to some great scientific questions not by merely reading a textbook, but by getting involved in a hands-on project, and watching science unfold before my very eyes. Last year, I completed a cancer-related project, where I studied a potential anti-cancer therapy. I had the opportunity to work in a laboratory, live the life of a scientist, and share my findings with other talented young researchers – and this happened at the MSSS. I then had the privilege of meeting other brilliant minds at the Canada Wide Science Fair, and I whole-heartedly thank the MSSS for providing me with this experience of a lifetime. As a university student, I approach my education with more than a high school diploma, but with 7 years of experience in scientific inquiry gained at the MSSS. Participation in the MSSS has given me the ability to succeed in my studies. I feel comfortable in the classroom and the laboratory, and am not timid to express my thoughts on science. The MSSS has also provided a scholarship to help alleviate the cost of tuition and textbooks, for which I am truly appreciative. To all budding scientists, I encourage you to participate in the MSSS! Good luck, and all the best!

Mark WuThe Manitoba Schools Science Symposium allowed me to express my interest in research and present my group project’s results to a panel of educated and well-informed judges. The symposium provided an opportunity to receive feedback, respond to questions and interact with the public audience, like-minded peers, and judges. In preparation for the presentation at the symposium, I gained knowledge in a specialized area through literature reviews and discussion with mentors, and gained practical experience through hands-on experiments. I learned to collaborate with my mentors and partners, think critically and thoroughly to develop and carry out the project, and communicate effectively for presentation during the symposium. Presenting in front of the judges proved enjoyable and meaningful as they tested our knowledge on our particular field while providing constructive and encouraging feedback. My participation in the Manitoba Schools Science Symposium constituted a fundamental component towards my high school science studies and provided me with an opportunity to apply my scientific knowledge for practical applications. Having completed one semester of university so far, I feel confident and prepared in all my courses, largely due to overcoming the challenges that come along with completing a project and adapting an assiduous mindset as a result of the work required to accomplish such a task. I am tremendously grateful for receiving the MSSS scholarship, as it has helped me financially towards my post-secondary education, supporting my tuition and books. Moreover, I am grateful for all the skills I attained, the opportunities I was presented, and the people I met by completing a project and participating in the Manitoba Schools Science Symposium. |
